Commercial flat roof refurbishment at MRC Harwell Oxfordshire showing LangGuard free-standing guardrail system and designated red mineral felt walkways installed on new felt roofing system.

Project Overview

All Aspect Roofing and Solar Solutions were appointed to refurbish the existing flat roof system at MRC Harwell in Oxfordshire. The project involved upgrading a deteriorating asphalt roof to improve waterproofing, thermal performance and long-term durability.

The works were carried out while the research facility remained fully operational, with specialist ventilation and other building services needing to remain in use throughout. This required careful planning and phased delivery to minimise disruption while providing a durable roofing solution that would extend the life of the existing structure.

The Challenge

The existing roof consisted of asphalt over deck, with PIR insulation and a felt overlay system that had deteriorated over time. A long-term refurbishment was required to improve waterproofing and extend the life of the roof without replacing the underlying structure.

A key challenge was the large ventilation systems located on the roof, which needed to remain operational throughout the project. Temporary arrangements were put in place at ground level so the systems could continue running while the roofing works progressed safely in stages.

As the facility remained occupied and operational, the works also required careful phasing, controlled access and close coordination with the site team to maintain safety and minimise disruption.

The Solution

Survey and Roofing Specification

Following a detailed inspection, the existing roof was stripped back to the structural deck. We specified the Langley TA-25 tapered warm roof system, incorporating tapered insulation to improve drainage and thermal performance. The new system included a vapour control layer, tapered insulation and a high-performance torch-applied waterproofing membrane, backed by a 25-year manufacturer guarantee.

Roof Preparation and Installation

The works covered approximately 1,800m² across four planned phases. As part of the refurbishment, parapets were upgraded with marine plywood and a felt finish, while new powder-coated aluminium trims, hopper heads and downpipes were installed. Red mineral felt walkways were also incorporated to provide safer access for future roof maintenance, along with a LangGuard free-standing permanent guardrail system for perimeter protection.

The mechanical plant and ventilation systems located on the roof were temporarily relocated and reinstated in stages as the work progressed. This allowed the facility’s essential systems to remain operational throughout the refurbishment.

Programme and Coordination

The phased programme allowed the roofing works to progress safely while the facility remained fully operational. Close communication with the facilities management team ensured the building’s operational requirements were considered at every stage and disruption was kept to a minimum.

How It Looks

The Results

The completed refurbishment provided a fully renewed roofing system across approximately 1,800m², improving weather resistance, drainage and thermal performance. The new Langley TA-25 tapered warm roof system, including a vapour control layer and improved drainage falls, provides a durable long-term solution backed by a 25-year manufacturer guarantee.

The refurbishment also included new hopper heads and downpipes, together with a permanent LangGuard safety handrail system to support future maintenance access. The project was delivered safely and in planned phases, allowing the research facility to remain fully operational throughout the works with minimal disruption.
