Project Overview

All Aspect Roofing was appointed by Oxfordshire County Council to replace the flat roof and drainage system at St. Andrew’s Church of England Primary School while the school remained open during term time. The existing roof was suffering from persistent leaks and water ingress, causing disruption to teaching and the day-to-day use of the building.

The project involved removing the worn roof covering and installing a new structural deck, insulation and high-performance warm roof system, alongside improvements to the drainage system. The works were designed to provide a durable, weather-resistant solution while maintaining a safe environment for pupils and staff throughout the refurbishment.

The Challenge

The existing flat roof had suffered extensive water ingress due to deteriorated waterproofing and inadequate drainage, causing ongoing disruption within the school. As the works took place during term time, careful planning was essential to maintain a safe environment for pupils and staff while keeping disruption to a minimum. Access and working areas were carefully managed throughout the project to allow the refurbishment to progress safely around the school’s daily activities.

The Solution

Survey and Roofing Specification

Following a detailed inspection, the existing felt roofing was removed and replaced with a new 18mm structural deck. The new roof was built up with a primer, vapour control layer, Parafoam Ultra insulation and the Langley TA-25 tapered warm roof system. The torch-applied system is backed by a 25-year guarantee and has an expected service life of 40 years, providing a durable and weather-resistant solution for the school.

Roof Preparation and Installation

The site was secured with scaffolding, safety fencing and appropriate signage before the roofing works began. The existing roof was stripped back to deck level, while the internal drainage outlets were made redundant and replaced with new external guttering. The new insulation and waterproofing system were then installed in a controlled sequence to provide a complete, weather-resistant finish.

Planning and Coordination

The project was carried out during term time while the school remained fully operational. The works were carefully phased to maintain a safe environment for pupils and staff, with regular communication between the client, site management team and school representatives. Controlled access and careful planning helped keep disruption to the school’s daily activities to a minimum.

The Results

The completed refurbishment provided a fully renewed warm roof system, improving waterproofing, drainage and the overall durability of the building.
